Opening Day Regatta
May 10th 2008

The miserable-looking weather Saturday morning might have scared a few sailors off, but those who came to Rock Hall Yacht Club's Opening Day regatta were treated to a great day of sailing once the weather moved out. What started as light drizzle through the morning cleared up as the fleet was heading to the racecourse. The 5 knot wind in the morning slowly built to about 12 knots by the middle of the afternoon.

The race committee ran two 45-minute races and one 75-minute race. The first race saw three different leaders on the three different legs. Ultimately it was Peter Gates (RHYC), who picked the better shifts through the middle of the course on the last leg to take the gun. On the second race Nicholas Place (CRYC) got an early lead followed closely by Mitch Grieb (RHYC) and Roger Link (WRSC). Nicholas held them off to take the gun on the second race. On the 3rd and final 5-leg race in 10-12+ knots winds it was Nicholas Place who got out front and stayed there to finish first followed by Peter Gates and Roger Link.

The top three finishers were Nicholas Place (CRYC), Peter Gates (RHYC), and Roger Link (WRSC). First female was Faye Flam (RHYC). -Jon Deutsch
